KATY
-In the end, David simply ran out of stones against Goliath.

La Marque pushed Houston Yates for a half, but could not withstand the Lions' third quarter surge, falling 101-83 in the Class 4A, Region III finals at Merrell Center on Saturday night.

"We just let it get away from us," said Cougars point guard Jordan Dotson. "It hurts bad to lose this way."

La Marque (34-3) trailed only 48-44 when Dotson (15 points) buried a 44-foot shot as the horn sounded to end the first half. They closed the gap to a basket after a shot from Quevin Cams early in the third quarter.

From there, it was all Yates (34-0), which won its second straight Region III title while tying the national high school record with 14 consecutive games with at least 100 points.

The Lions outscored the Cougars 24-16 in the third, including a 14-4 run that began to finally give them separation from a La Marque team that had pushed them harder than any of Yates' 33 previous victims had.

"They're a great team," said La Marque junior guard Julien Lewis, who led the Cougars with 23 points before fouling out in the final minute of play. "I think we just got carried away by trying to do too much (in the third quarter).

" The Cougars would never draw closer than 13 points in the fourth quarter, trailing by as much as 19 points.

Brandon Peters led Yates with a game-high 33 points, while Joseph Young added 20, Darius Gardner had 15 and Alex Davis chipped in 11 points.

Wesley Henderson scored 16 points for La Marque.
